Jaisalmer
The Golden city named as Jaisalmer. It is a town in the state of Rajasthan. It is located 575 kilometres, west of the capital Jaipur. It is a world Heritage site. Town stands on the yellowish sandstone, Crowned by a fort which contains the palace and some ornate Jain temples. The town lies in the heart of the Thar Desert.
Jaisalmer is named after the Maharawal Jaisal Singh, a Rajput king who founded the town in 1156 AD. Jaisalmer means ‘the Hill Fort of Jaisal. Jaisalmer is known by the name of The Golden City of India “because of the yellow sand and yellow sandstone is used in every architecture of the city which gives yellowish – golden tinge to the city and in its surrounding area.
Jaisalmer also celebrate its Desert festival in the month of February every year.
How to reach:
By Air
Though Jaisalmer is not connected directly to airways service as such, Jodhpur airport is 300km away. Jodhpur is well connected to all the major metros of India. From Jodhpur you can hire a Cab or you can go by train according to your preferences.
By train
Jaisalmer is connected to major cities of India. Direct trains are also available to Jodhpur as well as from Delhi.
By Road:
Jaisalmer is connected to rest of the state by the well maintained roads. To Indo-pak border, special emphasis is given for its maintenance. Ordinary and deluxe buses of Rajasthan Roadways and private companies to operate from Jaisalmer to Jodhpur, Bikaner, Mount Abu, Jalore, Jaipur, Ahmadabad.
1. Jaisalmer Fort:
Jaisalmer Fort is one of the largest forts in the world. Situated in the city of Jaisalmer, Rajasthan. Jaisalmer Fort was built in 1156 AD by the Bhati Rajput ruler Rawal Jaisal. Jaisalmer Fort stands proudly amidst the golden stretches’ of the great Desert Thar, on the Trikuta Hill. The massive yellow sandstone walls of the fort are a tawny lion colour during the day time and at the time of sun set it fades to honey-gold. Due to this reason it is known as Sonar Quila.
The fort is located in the very heart the city, and it is one of the most notable monuments in the locality.
Jaisalmer fort is the 2nd largest fort of Rajasthan. The fort has 99 bastions, 92 of which were built between 1633 and 1647.Till today also you can find that nearby one fourth of the old City’s population resides within the fort. Akshya Pol, Ganesh Pol,Hawa Pol and Suraj Pol are a must see.
2. Bada Bagh:
Bada Bagh also known as Barabagh ( Big Garden). It is garden complex about 6km north of jaisalmer on way to Ramgarh and the halfway between Jaisalmer and Lodhruva in stae of Rajasthan, India. Bada Bagh contains a set of royal cenotaphs, or chhatris of Maharajas of jaisalmer.
Bada Bagh was commissioned by Maharawal Jait Singh in the early 16th century and it was completed by his son Lunakaran after his death. The fort has three different things to watch, a garden, a tank and a dam.
3. Gadsisar Lake:
Gadsisar Lake is one of the major tourist attractions of the jaisalmer. Just leaving the madding crowd behind and venture towards the outskirts and one will find themselves next to famous Gadsisar Lake.
This place was selected due to it had a certain amount of declivity already and it automatically retained some of rain water. If you go for a venture in winters, might get to see a variety of migratory birds also.
There are number of varieties of temples and shrines surrounding the lake.
